What if a Housemate is Self-isolating with Coronavirus Symptoms? Coronavirus#4

Hello and welcome back to our fourth instalment to our series of coronavirus blogs and videos.

This episode is answering a question about self-isolation

Janine asked…

"Given the directive today that if there is anyone in the household with a cough or temperature, that everyone in the household must self-isolate for 14 days. How would this work in an HMO and what if tenants don't abide by this?"

Firstly, in your communications with housemates, you must ask them to let you know if they need to self-isolate.

There are two reasons to self-isolate

  1. Precautionary self-isolation where you don't have any symptoms.

  2. Self-isolation because you do have the symptoms of a cough and a high temperature.

When housemates are isolating and don't have the symptoms, you need to let the other housemates know and they need to be vigilant and follow the procedures for allowing space (the two meter rule), and keep everything clean in the kitchen and the bathroom, especially.

And not using the shared areas together and staying as far away from each other as they can.

If any housemates are self-isolation with symptoms, then all the housemates should self-isolate for 14 days.

The government has given some guidelines about how to interact in the house during those 14 days.

How can you enforce this?

As landlords, we can only ask our housemates to be super, super vigilant and to make sure that they do as much as they possibly can.

Each of us must do as much as we can to stop the virus spreading.

While we can't stand over them and make them abide by it, we do need to let them know that they definitely should follow the guidelines.

The government guidelines say that you should minimise time in the same space, so housemates need to eat in their own room, stay two meters away from each other, focus on cleanliness especially in shared kitchens and bathrooms.

And wash your hands extra diligently and more often than usual.

Those are the protocols and our role is to encourage our housemates to do them and to communicate. And we direct housemates to the government advice as we’re not the experts on this.

I hope that information has helped you understand more about self-isolation and what to do if any of your housemates are in or need to be in self-isolation.

Summary

  • If housemates are self-isolating without symptoms other housemates need to follow social distancing and cleanliness protocols

  • If tenants are self-isolating with symptoms other housemates need to self-isolate for 14 days and follow social distancing and cleanliness protocols
