How can you make £500 in a month without using R2R?
Find out my handy tips on how to make some extra money…
Hello and welcome back to another Rent 2 Rent success short and sweet video and blog - I know you're going to love this one.
The video and blog this week aren’t an answer to a specific question, but I want to talk about a subject I get lots of emails about….
“I can't start in rent to rent right now because I haven't got any money and I don't have a way of getting money”.
“I've got debt, or my income is too low, and my outgoings are too high”.
I want to explain how to make £500 within a month, and it's not about rent to rent this time!
It’s something someone explained to me many years ago.
I was just starting out and I didn't have a lot of money at the time and I was really angry with the person that told me about this because I thought this person does not understand. They don't understand where I am, what my life is like and that I can't do these things.
What she said to me was that I don't lack resources, I lack resourcefulness.
And I thought, but I do lack resources - I haven't got money, I go to the shops and literally count the pennies, and ask myself, “shall I have butter or not because can I really afford that?”
Her argument was that I could get more money into my life and all I had to do was offer more value. And again, that really got my heckles up because I thought, well, is she trying to say I'm not valuable? And what I do is not valuable because I don't have enough money.
I’m working in a job that I think I can do, and I don't think I can get the higher paid jobs – and her comments really annoyed me!
But in the end, I started to think about it more because what she said is that we live in one of the richest countries in the world and there's money all around us. And how you get more of it is by being more valuable and it's not fair the way that things are valued.
For example, a nurse could be earning less than somebody doing things on social media. And the value in society of what they offer is saving people's lives and looking after people who are ill, but yet they won't get paid as much necessarily as somebody who helps people with their social media.
How can you offer more value to get paid more?
It's thinking about what is the value economically in society? How can you have things that are more valuable that enable you to get paid more? And is it possible for you to move from being paid a low amount to being paid a lot?
We know that it is because we all know people who've done it, who've gone from being paid a really small amount to being paid a higher amount. Maybe that's you? Maybe 10 years ago you were paid much less than you are now. It’s certainly very true for me.
I was thinking in this very linear way this is what I get paid and I can't get any more than this right now. I was only thinking about how to spend less money, I wasn't thinking about how to make more money.
It took me a long time to really take it on board. But once I did, I started to see I could do so many different things - I could be more valuable at work, I could ask for a pay rise, I could think about taking on a side hustle or take on a different type of job that might pay more for doing the same work or even less.
So, I started applying for jobs that had bigger salaries. You don’t just have to make this about what other people decide that you're worth, you can take it into your own hands and make money because you choose to.
Selling your things
I thought that I could sell some things of value in my house - so many of us have lots of stuff around our homes, especially if you've got a growing family.
I remember I started selling my son Alex's things on eBay and made over £1,000 just selling clothes, toys, all sorts of knickknacks and electrical things. So, try selling things that you no longer use or need.
Rent a bedroom out
If you've got more bedrooms than you need in your home, you could rent a bedroom out… lots of people recoil in horror when I suggest this! But it's a fantastic way to make extra money without having to do anything.
You could have somebody who only needs a room from Monday to Friday - so you share in the working week and then the person goes back to their own house at the weekend and you've got your place back to yourself.
Where I live in Newport, you could get about £400 a month and maybe more depending on the location – it’s a great way to make some money to add to your investment.
Offer other services
What other services could you offer people? Get an advert on Gumtree or Facebook and see if anyone needs a dog walker for example, or football coaching or guitar tutoring. You can use a website called ‘People per hour’ and see what help people are looking for.
You might be a social media wizard, or a designer - think about the things that people might ask your advice for and start charging for it.
You could also host some small social events and charge people by supplying food and drink and telling people you're fundraising for the launch of your business.
I've given you a few ideas, but the main idea I want to convey to you is to ask yourself the question…
How could I add more value in a way that I could earn more money than I'm currently earning?
And once you start asking yourself that question, you will get better answers and the ideas will come to you. They might not come straight away, but the ideas will come to you and it is possible for you to make that extra money.
If I said to you, I need you to pay £500 within the month, or something very bad is going to happen - you would do it and you'd be able to leverage everything that you have.
Money is just a value exchange
You're exchanging your value for money - you're putting value out there and you're getting the money back. So, when you think about the different kinds of value that you can offer, you can also think about the more money that you could get.
Let me know what you think about this idea. Are you like me who thought that this idea was just absolute rubbish or did you immediately think yes, I can think in a slightly different way and earn more money, create more value in my life really simply without even having to change your job.
I do recommend that you start to think about adding more value in your workplace, asking for a pay rise but showing how you're adding more value and how that translates into the bottom line for the business.
Looking forward to hearing all your comments and thoughts on this subject.
All the best,
Stephanie & Nicky
