4000 weeks
192 – We loved Oliver Burkeman’s insights on how to think about your time and your life and to have the time of your life while you’re here.
Today’s episode was inspired by the fact that on average we have 4000 weeks here on earth.
It begs the question, what are you doing with yours?
We loved the author’s insights on how to think about your time and your life to have the time of your life while you’re here.
4000 weeks is almost 77 years.
The oldest person ever whose age has been independently verified is Jeanne Calment (1875–1997) of France, who lived to 122 years and 164 days. This is 6385 weeks.
Does hearing 4000 weeks change the way you think about your life?
Does it feel short?
Or maybe it feels long.
For many, it can bring on a sense of panic.
Am I wasting time?
Am I doing the right things?
What do I really want to do?
I loved the author’s take on it.
We are time.
Each of us inseparable from time.
The time we spend, is our lives.
Our lives are made up of moments.
He encourages us to enjoy the time for it’s own sake.
Let go of having to make every moment productive.
And also have a few goals.
Have a few plans.
The modern frenetic pace comes from somehow trying to have it all.
The relationships, familial and beyond.
The business or career.
The travel.
The hobbies, interests.
Contentment comes from choosing and knowing that a choice to do one thing in that moment.
Having children means you can’t experience not having children, for example.
It’s actually freeing to know that although the options are infinite, each of us individually can made the finite choices which we want.
But consciously choose what you want to do.
And only choose a few.
He suggests only have 3 big projects at a time and not taking on new commitments until those are complete.
Commit to them in the times we choose.
In short time-bursts.
Choose how we want to relax and have fun and do those things.
Family. Friends. Walking. Hobbies.
What truly lights your fire.
I love the finitude of life.
That we’re here.
Then we’re gone.
We’re incredibly lucky to be here at this moment in time.
Where there’s so much opportunity.
But too, does it cause anxiety to have so many options?
Getting things done.
Reliably.
Is one of the keys to success.
And we can define success for ourselves.
What you do with your 4000 hours is your life?
How you choose to spend your hours is your level of contentment of happiness.
And we need to bring consciousness to it.
I speak to so many people who would love to get started in property.
But don’t.
They never take the first step.
I can understand because we waited so long to get started too.
Now I’m grateful that we did.
I love not having to be a square peg in a round hole in the corporate world.
I love not having to ask for time off.
I love not having to give mental energy to office drama.
