Introducing The Nicky Taylor - The Woman, The Myth, The Legend

Hello and welcome to episode 30 of The Rent 2 Rent Success Podcast.

We have a super exciting episode here today.

Joining me today on the podcast is…

The woman,
The myth,
The legend that is…

The Nicky Taylor!

Nicky is the one who makes our businesses work behind the scenes.
I think of it as an even division of labour.
Nicky does the work,
I take the glory!

Nicky very much prefers being behind the scenes and creating the content and pushing Stephanie to the front.

What we’re going to talk about today is not property.

You’ll be meeting Nicky.
Who she is,
What her story is.

We had a chat earlier, and some of the things even I didn’t know!

We’ll find out…

The question on everyone’s lips.

Who is the eldest?

And lots more...

  • Who fell out of the car?

  • What happened to Nicky’s career in the military?

  • How she went from rising star to redundant

  • Her move from banking to education

  • How many members of staff did it required to replace Nicky from her last full-time role?

And what in heaven’s name made her join her crazy sister in this property malarkey!

Sisters… A unique and special bond.

Sisters… A unique and special bond.

Here are the highlights

So let’s kick this off and go back down memory lane to when you were 16 years old.

In Nicky’s words…

At 16, I was getting ready to leave school, and was confused as I didn’t know what to do.

I decided to join the Army after college to be like my dad as he was in the Army.

I went to college to study accountancy and chemistry as my Dad was a bookkeeper.

I joined collage in September and by Christmas I decided to leave as I didn’t have the passion to go into the Army in the end.

I then joined a Youth Training Scheme

  • Earning £30 per week

  • I had to give my mum a third of my wages

Worked for Alpine soft drinks, a company that delivered fizzy pop to your door as a sales ledger and in the credit control department.

Then I worked for Golden loaf bakery as an accounts assistant. I blew them away as I was overdelivering with my super drive and determination. I worked hard to achieve a bonus, but it never appeared which was upsetting.

I felt there was no room to progress in this company as it was a same family business.

I then started to do some temping and after a few jobs, and one that kept extending my temp contract, I realised I needed to move out of Birmingham.

I moved to London where my auntie lived, and envisaged an exciting future ahead. I had lots of hunger and energy.

I managed to secured a job before I moved.

I went from the backwaters of Birmingham to the cut and thrust of London working for the Big 4 investment banks

  • I was working 15 hours days

  • I got promoted through the ranks: Asst Payroll Coordinator, Asst Manager of Payroll, Asst VP Payroll Manager, VP of HR, Head of HR, Global HR, HR Director

  • I was seen as a ‘Rising Star’ and ‘Top Talent’

But I faced redundancy 3 times!

The Wake up call

  • I was living to work and not working to live. Which is fine when you’re passionate about a role.

  • Delivering tremendous value for companies but at what cost to myself

I moved from banks to education in the hope of a new challenge that worked better for my life.

  • Director of Business & Operations at a new school.

  • 60% drop in salary but OK because;

    • Allow to give back to community instead of making the bank richer I’d be really making a difference

    • Better quality of life after all schools aren’t open 15 hours per day. And closed for 6 weeks in the summer!

  • I designed and implemented procedures and systems

  • Passed an audit with no issues or changes required

  • But the days started to get long

  • And when I eventually decided to leave, my job was filled by 3 members of staff.

I took a trip to Jamaica for 3 months to relax and decide on what to do next.

Downloaded a book that Stephanie recommended as I was at a crossroads and this was an inspiration read.

Back home, Stephanie shared her idea of a rent to rent business and working together as a team

And that’s where our business started!
